Demystifying business model canvas

Previously I wrote about a workshop I attended titled Master Your Business Plan for 2023. A big part of the workshop was devoted to the topic of the business model canvas, what is it used for and why is it important so I wanted to devote one blog post solely to this topic.

What is a business model canvas?

The business model canvas is a visual tool used to plan and design the structure of a business so you can easily communicate a business idea or concept. The template can be used to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot different business models. The canvas consists of nine building blocks that represent the key elements of a business: customer segments, value proposition, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partners, and cost structure. It is a flexible and simple tool that can help entrepreneurs, startups, and established companies to understand and develop their business models.

The business model canvas is a powerful tool for understanding and designing the structure of a business, and for driving innovation and growth. Personally, I would always start developing a business model canvas before writing a business plan as I see that a good business model canvas is a backbone of a good business plan.
